We often ask ourselves how we individually can make a difference. Whether that be a difference to improve our lives, our work, our health, our selves or even our planet.
I discovered a wonderful story recently called The Starfish Story by Loren Eisley. It tells of an old man walking along a beach after a storm which is littered with starfish washed up onto the sand. In the distance he can see a young boy bending down and throwing each starfish he comes across back into the sea. As the old man gets closer he asks the boy what he is doing.
The young boy replies “throwing the starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up and when the sun gets high they will die unless I throw them back into the water.”
The old man replied “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach – you won’t be able to make that much of a difference”.
The young boy picks up another starfish and throws it back into the water and says, “I made a difference to that one”.
Today is “National Make A Difference Day”.
Is there something you want to change or improve in your life? Do you want to get more organised and remove the clutter? If you feel daunted by the task then remember that big changes come from small beginnings with small steps along the way.
Here are some top tips to help you to get started:
- Start with something small – your handbag or your underwear or sock drawer. Choose something that is easy and achievable. If you are sorting out clothes then check out Marie Kondo’s advice on folding clothes – it can become quite addictive!
- Set aside 15 minutes a day to tackle the task. Similar to a concentrated work out session, keep focused and keep going until your 15 minutes is up. Then stop and carry on with your day. Continue this each day until the task is finished – you will be surprised how much you achieve over a week and you may find it develops into a daily habit.
- Book a session with a professional organiser. Working with a professional organiser can help you structure how you go about decluttering and organising and give you some useful tips and tricks along the way.
So go on – pick up that first starfish and make a difference.
